Community and Digital Media

The internet was created as means where data was to be sent throughout space over a server allowing access by individuals. Along these lines, it was the first attempt where storage was introduced and communication amplified. The internet was not created to substitute the real world. Some believe that it was an attempt to limit physical social interaction between people. But these points have been highly disregarded as technology progresses against this idea. The idea is not to keep people from interacting, but to act as a grid where we can communicate more than we could in the past. The more time we spend away from others has a great impact on interaction as we simply cannot see them. As we "keep in touch" it will generally increase physical social interaction. It could also promote the idea as people have been using the internet's communication tools as alternative ways to set-up meetings and so forth.

unfortunately there also has been abuse with concern to the internet and the use of all of its ways to help communicate. The major issue is identity falsification. It is very easy to withhold your actual identity while online. To enter anonymously to a chat room needs little to no prerequisite knowledge. Many charges have been brought against offenders who use the internet to make others believe they are someone that they are not. Like many other facets in life there are always ways in which people try to oppose the just ways in which it tries to work. But these are just a few of the things that can possibly happen with a system that can be manipulated by the user. But not all are bad. It is a community were we can connect and share things especially to those who we cannot see everyday. It keeps families close by offering ways to talk and view each other as if they were there already. As the internet adapts and grows it will continuously make it easier for people to interact and form virtual communities that act as real communities.

  1. The anonymity of the internet medium is both a great and terrible thing. On one hand, it allows a user to feel totally at ease with how they represent themselves online, showing aspects of their personality that would never come out otherwise.

On the other hand, anonymity can also be terrible; especially when mixed with naivety. People who feel free to express themselves will often share personal information; addresses, card numbers, sometimes even their own name, sacrificing their anonymity without a second thought. Then, if they happen to write this information down attached to their name, where anyone can find it, their private life suddenly becomes public information.

As with any other freedom, the internet comes with responsibilities. One must avoid sharing information with strangers, and avoid posting information about themselves publicly, lest it be used against them. The internet is both a wonderful and a dangerous place, and it can be a great means of connection, provided the user is wise with who they trust.
