Cyberspace

Here is a paragraph from a paper that I wrote. It explains what cyberspace is and its brief development.

"The internet is called many different things from the web to being commonly referred to as 'online' in the modern and most recent present. Cyberspace was a term created that would initially mean a realm that has endless possibilities. Lister makes a note of a very useful quote, “ We inhabit cyberspace when we feel ourselves moving through the interface into a relatively independent world with its own dimensions and rules.” (Heim from Lister 221/ 2009) What is most striking from the following excerpt is that it genuinely describes the cyber world in which we pass through. There is also talk that it is an escape but also a connection to real life. These would include our day to day conscious efforts to constantly interact along a path where we devote much time to doing many things." (Saporito 2009)

I decided to pull this directly because it is essentially what this topic is about. A space that is supposed to connect the real world with our cybernetic world.

Community and Digital Media

The internet was created as means where data was to be sent throughout space over a server allowing access by individuals. Along these lines, it was the first attempt where storage was introduced and communication amplified. The internet was not created to substitute the real world. Some believe that it was an attempt to limit physical social interaction between people. But these points have been highly disregarded as technology progresses against this idea. The idea is not to keep people from interacting, but to act as a grid where we can communicate more than we could in the past. The more time we spend away from others has a great impact on interaction as we simply cannot see them. As we "keep in touch" it will generally increase physical social interaction. It could also promote the idea as people have been using the internet's communication tools as alternative ways to set-up meetings and so forth.

unfortunately there also has been abuse with concern to the internet and the use of all of its ways to help communicate. The major issue is identity falsification. It is very easy to withhold your actual identity while online. To enter anonymously to a chat room needs little to no prerequisite knowledge. Many charges have been brought against offenders who use the internet to make others believe they are someone that they are not. Like many other facets in life there are always ways in which people try to oppose the just ways in which it tries to work. But these are just a few of the things that can possibly happen with a system that can be manipulated by the user. But not all are bad. It is a community were we can connect and share things especially to those who we cannot see everyday. It keeps families close by offering ways to talk and view each other as if they were there already. As the internet adapts and grows it will continuously make it easier for people to interact and form virtual communities that act as real communities.

Evolution of Digital Media

Digital media derived from the simplest forms of communication. what we are faced with is the computer age and how it continues to change and grow over time. What we see is how technology, when created, was the newest form of communicating and the newest way of reaching people. As one is replaced another takes its place. But the new one always uses the former's methodologies or ideas that created it before hand. The list elongates and sometimes the new media recently created faces scrutiny. More people want to preserve the past and sometimes fear new technology will ruin it. This is not what is intended, what is being done is creating new ways to compile and save the past in order to keep it forever. Having accounts of every situation and every instance in time, It simply will not perish. People can learn more from it and about it without worrying that the computer will replace it. The computer is not something that will replace books and texts, it is only a tool that can hold information so your bookshelf does not have to. The computer is the latest in the transformation process that the human mind has created. It will constantly be tweaked in order to update and amplify the way people communicate.

New Media...Literally

One thing that I attempted to do was break down 'New Media' into literal terms. First thing I did was start with the word new. Now this is not anything we don't think we already know. But if we dig deeper we realize that if we define it in simpler terms we come to a well thought out and managed definition. 'New' is best described as the way in which something is found in the present and contemporary tense. It is released and introduced for the first time. 'Media' is the plural derivative of its counterpart 'medium' which is the method or system that creates a delivery system of documentation. Medium in the past has been the paint for the canvas, the graphite for the paper, etc. It sets the wheel in motion for creation. It is the foundation and basis for the work that has been created. Now when we put these two together what we get would be similar to the idea of ' A contemporary method of creating documentation for communication'. It is very simple when thinking about it. The ways in which we do things are always changing and they will always be studied for further revisions. The media of today is relied heavily on computers and it is what we now consider a digital culture.
